The 2023 UN Climate Change Conference (COP 28) was held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, from 30th November 2023 to 12th December 2023. IFSD along with our partners International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD), International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and Prakriti Resources Centre (PRC) jointly organized sessions at the Canada Pavilion and Nepal Pavilion.
IFSD’s key areas of focus at COP28 were Loss and Damage, transformative adaptation, climate-water risks management, food security, gender equity, and addressing climate-development nexus in the Global South.
High-Level Panel on Strengthening Loss and Damage Response and Capacity in Global South

This event provides grounded insights drawn from the unique experiences and challenges faced by four vulnerable countries in the Global South: Vanuatu, Nepal, Senegal, and Bangladesh. These insights directly contribute to the ongoing discussions on the establishment of the L&D Fund, emphasizing the principles of climate justice. A high-level panel discussion will also be held, involving representatives from both the Global North (Canada) and the Global South countries, providing a platform for direct engagement and exchange, fostering a more inclusive and cooperative approach to addressing losses and damage. By bridging gaps, promoting collaboration, and encouraging both North-South and South-South cooperation, the event aims to effectively and equitably address climate-induced losses and damages.
Addressing climate loss and damage in the mountains and its downstream in the Himalayan Region: High-Level Dialogue

This event shares evidence from Nepal, Bhutan, and Bangladesh, highlighting on the losses and damages faced by vulnerable countries in two distinct ecosystems: mountainous regions and coastal areas. It aims to amplify the voices of the most vulnerable communities to actively contribute to the ongoing debate on the operationalization of the Loss and Damage (L&D) Fund, ensuring it effectively supports their needs. Further, the event will facilitate knowledge sharing among stakeholders in the Hindu-Kush Himalayas (HKH) and South Asia region, promoting collaboration and cooperation in addressing climate-induced loss and damage. By fostering partnerships and encouraging collective efforts, the event aims to build resilience of the most vulnerable communities in the HKH and South Asia region.
