Collaborator: International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED)
Project Overview:
As a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), Timor-Leste is acutely vulnerable to the escalating impacts of climate change, including both economic and non-economic losses and damages. The REAL project supports the development of evidence-based, community-informed strategies to address climate-induced Loss and Damage (L&D). In Timor-Leste, the project seeks to elevate locally grounded perspectives through inclusive research, multi-stakeholder engagement, and strategic capacity building.
IFSD’s engagement under the REAL project focuses on understanding the differentiated impacts of L&D, amplifying community voices, and supporting policy processes with evidence-based insights.
Services Provided by IFSD:
- Conducting localised research to assess economic and non-economic losses and damages in Timor Leste and documenting community narratives, lived experiences and resilience strategies across diverse social groups.
- Developing case studies showcasing L&D impacts, adaptive responses, and lessons for policy and practice.
- Organising multi-stakeholder dialogues and workshops at municipal and national levels to co-produce knowledge and validate findings.
- Contributing to the L&D observatory and digital archive with evidence-based insights.
- Leading a mentorship and peer learning program to strengthen local research capacities and build a network of trained practitioners.
